The Very Hungry Caterpillar Voted Best Children’s Book of All Time

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been voted most-loved children’s book ever, adding to its existing status as the most read children’s book in the UK. A study of 2,000 parents by – the UK’s fastest-growing parenting community and website – found that the classic story of a caterpillar that turns into a beautiful butterfly was the top children’s book that parents love to read to their kids.
The poll results confirming the enormous popularity of this multi-million-selling classic are timely in more ways than one. Not only was World Book Day – a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading – celebrated in the UK on the 1st of March, soon after the poll results were published, but The Very Hungry Caterpillar will soon be celebrating an important date of its own, as this much-loved property approaches its 50th birthday in 2019.
As activity increases in the lead-up to the property’s big birthday, The World of Eric Carle’s UK licensing agent Rocket Licensing maximised The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s in-store presence for this year’s World Book Day with a lovely range of dress-up outfits by Amscan. The launch of the dress-up range into leading grocery channels and independents was supported by a successful social media campaign which saw social influencers, as well as singer and presenter Kimberley Walsh, sharing photographs of their children dressed up and enjoying this children’s classic read. Kimberley’s post of her son wearing the Amscan dress-up achieved nearly 6,000 likes on Instagram.
Competitions, retailer partnerships, online and magazine promotions and media support have further extended awareness of the brand. The Very Hungry Caterpillar live show continues to attract audiences throughout the UK, and The Giant Wiggle, an annual fund-raising event hosted by UK children’s charity Action for Children, continues to grow every year.
The licensing campaign for The World of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is managed in the UK by independent licensing company Rocket Licensing through the worldwide agent, The Joester Loria Group. The campaign has already seen the world’s favourite caterpillar inspire lines of developmental toys, plush, games, bedding, puzzles, craft and activity sets, greeting cards and much more.
